The region is rich in caves excavated from the tuffeau stone , a chalky stone used for the construction of houses, churches or castles.
The castle of Eternes was identified for the first time in history on 30 December 889 in a royal document of the King Eudes which beared confirmation of the assigned grounds. Located near the borders of Poitou, Anjou and Touraine, this wine producing property includes 40 hectares of vineyards including 16 ha in the castle grounds on the Southern slope.
