This trail leads down to Aquitaine via Angoulême. It crosses the Vienne from Angles sur Anglin, considered one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France" and follows the Anglin by the GR 48 which leads to Antigny. The trail crosses the Gartempe at Saint Savin by the Vieux Pont bridge.Saint savin has a an abbey ensemble listed as an Unesco World patrimonial heritage site for its mural paintings from the 11th and 12th centuries. The abbey used to be an important stop for pilgrims on the way to Galicia. The route leaves the GR48 at antigny. It follows the Valley of Frescos (Antigny, Jouhet, Pruniers). On arrival in Montmorillon, one continues on the GR48 which leads to L'Isle Jourdain. Montmorillon owns a special heritage of particular importance. The entirely renovated medieval sector of the City of the Written Word allows visitors to discover and meet the numerous crafts and craftsmen in this field. Then one follows the Vienne river from Lussac Les Châteaux to L'Isle Jourdain. The track leaves the GR 48 finally at L'Isle Jourdain to go towards Mauprevoir (a village given 2 stars for its floral decoration). Shortly before Mauprevoir, the track passes the Royal Abbey de la Réau, built in the 12th century. It follows then along to Charroux, where the Abbey of Charroux, classed a National Monument, is one of the most important in Poitou. The monastery has hundreds of relics among which a piece of the true cross. Following Surin; the trail leaves La Vienne. |
