Lusignan is situated between Poiters and Niort, in the region of the legendary mermaid Mélusine. A Green Holiday destination, the town was famous in the Middle Ages as the homeland of the Lords of Lusignan, kings of Cyprus, Jerusalem and Armenia.
Throughout the year the Tourist Office welcomes vistors to the ancient chateau of Mélusine. It offers the following:
- a programme of exhibitons of local artists
- guided tours by reservation of the chateau, the church at Jazeneuil
- during the summer season, guided tours at 6.30 pm under the auspices of "Les Mardis du Patrimoine" (Heritage Tuesdays).
Numerous cultural events take place throughout the summer, for example, "Summer Mélusine" and Cinema, the Charibaudes festival of circus and street theatre, medieval festivals, the melon festival in Coulombiers, and cultural evenings in Sanxay.
The covered marketplace in Rouillé is the home of the largest market in the area, every Friday morning. In Lusignan, the market is on Wednesdays.
