The town grew around a monastery comprised of two convents - one for men, the other for women - hence the name of the town, the cloître (the cloister).
The community dates to the beginning of the 12th century and was founded by the preacher Robert d'Abrissel. The monastery was a dependency of Fontevrault Abbey located close to Saumur. The site has a church, convent, and a 17th century "pigeonnier" dovecot. The priory was richly endowed with forests and vegetable gardens.
Recently restored, the site has recovered its past serenity with its square courtyard and garden pathways.
