THEOPHRASTE RENAUDOT MUSEUM - Loudun

Situated in the house where Thépohraste Renaudot was born (16th century), the waxwork museum tells the story of the founder of the French press. Serving as the king's personal doctor and as General Commissioner of the Poor of Realm, Renaudot settled in Paris in 1612. Thanks to his friend Richelieu, he founded France's first newspaper, La gazette in 1631. In addition, he also invented newspaper advertisements, the French national employment agency, and state owned pawnshops. See the 17th century lever operated printing press and numerous documents. You can even print a first copy of La Gazette . Visit the cellars and the medicinal herb garden. Each November the Renaudot Literary prize is presented to local school children. To discover: Loudun and its rich historical and cultural heritage.
