Church of St Pierre - Thuré

The white tuffeau limestone of this church is of the 12th C, the door of the dead is 15th C, as is the nave.

The church has preserved its 12th and 14th century origins with its chancel, transept, main door and east façade. The nave was built in the 15th century. The recently restored Romanesque east end of the church has three full-centred openings flanked by columns in the chapels where the modillions are decorated with human faces or monsters. Archaeologists have only recently discovered the 'door of the dead', which was named this way because it used to be the door where coffins were brought in. The 13th century pulpit is made of wood and stone.

Nearby : Châtellerault - its cultural heritage and museums.
