SAINTE RADEGONDE CHURCH - Poitiers

Originally called the church of 'Sainte-Marie-Hors-les-Murs,' the church later took the name of the venerated Saint Radegonde, who was laid to rest there after her death in 587 A.D. The church's entrance features a 15th century square (rebuilt in the 11th and 12th centuries) where juries met and justice was carried out. On the West side of the church, the high Gothic style doorway stands against a Romanesque tower or bell-porch. The nave, which was restored in the Gothic style of western France in the 13th century, leads to Sainte Radegonde's tomb beneath the chancel. Admire the chapels, and discover the crypt and sarcophagus with its marble statue that was a gift from Anne of Austria. Discover the 'Notre Dame Paths' - just follow the coloured lines on the pavements, starting at Notre Dame La Grande Church, and look out for the helpful signposts along the way as you discover exceptional historical monuments in the old town centre.
