A stop-over on the way to Santiago di Compostella since the 12th century, the church of Saint Hilaire is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Monument. Built in the 11th century, the church is dedicated to the famous Poitevin bishop Hilaire and has a Romanesque chancel and a Roman transept of impressive height and luminosity. Remarkable in the balance of its volume, the entrance to Sainte Hilaire opens to four chapels whose Romanesque wall paintings represent one of the first paintings of the Apocalypse. Also discover the 'Notre Dame Paths' - just follow the coloured lines on the pavements, starting at the Notre Dame La Grande Church, and look out for the helpful signposts along the way as you discover exceptional historical monuments in the old town centre.
