Located in a wooded valley, Nouaillé Maupertuis is a site of exceptional interest because of its 12th century fortified abbey and medieval vestiges. The defeat of the King of France, Jean the Good, took place here in 1356 and was a decisive event during the Hundred Year's War. From the end of the 12th century, the monastery felt the damage of the revolts against the Plantagenets followed by the Hundred Year War between the French and the English. On Monday September 9th, 1356, Jean II, more popularly known by the title of Jean the Good attacked Prince Noir, son of Edward III of England, and was taken prisoner. From the 17th to 19th of September , 1356, the French Armies and English clashed in the vicinity of the abbey. Special events: medieval festivals in May and June.
