Rising in the very heart of the Medieval town, the 12th century Collegiate Church is one of the jewels of Romanesque Art. The inside of the church is harmoniously designed and richly sculpted. Note that the outer walls curving over the apse and apsidal chapels are not cupola but simple saddle-backed coping walls hiding the slate roof. Inside the collegiate, the very height of the vaults lends lightness and luminosity to the edifice. All the wealth of this church is reunited in its chancel. The six columns of the chapel are world famous in their depictions of the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary, and in their depiction of many animals and monsters. The author of these scenes, a certain Geoffroy, is the signature figure over the chapel of the adoring Magis, which gives evidence of a creative inspiration and naive expressivity. Many cultural events take place throughout the city in July and August.
