On the edge of the Gartempe River, one of the most picturesque valleys of the department, the Moulin de la Gassotte Campsite is an ideal spot to discover the abbey of Saint-Savin, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its 12thC frescoes. The visit of the Saint-Savin Abbey can be followed by a visit to the Valley of the Frescos: a route connecting ten monuments decorated with frescoes dating from 12th to the 19th century along the Gartempe Valley, to Montmorillon with its "Town of the Written Word and Book Crafts" (Cité de l'Ecrit et des Métiers du Livre).
It is also the departure point of many hiking paths toward exceptional sites: Angles-sur-l'Anglin, one of the most beautiful villages in France, Chauvigny and its medieval city, and Snake Island (l'Ile aux Serpents) in La Trimouille.
