Many legends surround the necropolis and its several thousand tombs. The 350 Merovingian sarcophagi were probably the resting place for soldiers killed in 507 A.D. during the battle of Vouillé, between Clovis and the  Visigoths. This necropolis is also a witness of early christianisation in the area, since  it has a church with a baptismal font, still visible.  Note the romanitc atmosphere of the tombes around the chapel and fence, which is made exclusively of upright tombstones.

Also in Civaux : the cultural centre, and the partly restored Romanesque church standing on 4th century foundations. Not to be missed : the Abyssea Water Complex and Crocodile Planet.
